Negotiate a Debt Settlement

How do I negotiate small, old collection accounts?

I have 8 small, old collection accounts that are haunting me! How can I negotiate a debt settlement with small, old accounts?

  1. When you contact the collection agency and start talking about the account be advised that this is acknowledging the debt and will re-set the 7 year limit for which it can be reported on your credit report. Stress getting a 'pay for delete' if you pay what you owe (or make payment arrangements) once you're done they'll delete the negative info from your report...get it in WRITING only.!
  2. If you consider them small you should pay the full amount. If you can not afford it but would like to settle call the lender or collection agency and ask them if they will settle for less
  3. My recommendation would be to go to each of the 3 credit bureau sites and dispute them first. If they are not removed from your credit file, you will have to call each of the collection bureaus and negotiate a settlement. #1 - make sure you have the money you promise on hand, #2 - tell them you are trying to clean up some old credit problems and only have x dollars (start low). #3 follow through on any promise of payment you make. #4 Make sure the collection agency sends you a settlement agreement so that it is binding before you mail the payment. #5 Make it a requirement that the collection agency reports the account paid immediately
