Negotiate a Debt Settlement

Can you negotiate a settlement with a debt collector after being sued by them?

I have already received a petition from the court. I can't afford a lawyer to handle so I want to do the right thing and get this taken care of without going to court or having my wages garnished. Please help :(

  1. Are you sure they're suing you or did they just threaten to sue you? Of course you can settle with a debt collector....anything is better than nothing to them. I don't think they will waste money on hiring lawyers to sue you. They will say anything to you to get you to pay up on your delinquent bills.
  2. sure you can settle right up to the day you have to go to court -- but what ever deal you make be sure to follow through -- other wise they will come really hard the next time!!!
  3. You can negotiate even in court. Just state your facts and if the Judge agrees, the matter is settled.
  4. I would suggest you to go with a Debt settlement company and let them handle this for you, because Debt settlement companies can negotiate on your behalf and let you pay only percentage of what you owe and the best part is you have to pay this only in monthly payments and not in full as compare to collection agencies... here is a good one that i know http://www.debtcareusa.com
